Yarn Buying Guide

YarnXpress.com primarily sells novelty yarns. Novelty yarns are those yarns that contain multiple yarns, are highly textured, or are manufactured in such a way that they are unique and different from traditional, smooth yarns. They tend to be trendy. They are interesting alone and seldom support any intricate stitch pattern. In other words, novelty yarns seldom require fancy patterns.

The following charts are designed to help you ESTIMATE the amount of yarn that you might need. I STRESS that these are estimates and depend entirely on your gauge. Always purchase more than you will need because, for the most part, we purchase all existing quantities of the yarns we carry and when they are sold out, they are gone! This is one of the reasons that we sell yarn by the bag (the other reason is that it enables us to offer the yarn at the lowest prices possible!).

Chart 1: Yardage ESTIMATES for Adult Sweaters

Chart 2: Yardage ESTIMATES for Children’s Sweaters

On the site, you will see that we’ve provided you with gauge and yardage information for each yarn. All you need to do is to select a yarn that you adore and refer to the charts to assist you as you determine the amounts that you might need.

As you look around the site, you’ll also notice the following terms used to describe the yarn:

Polar weight:8-11 sts/ 4 inches
Bulky weight:12-14 sts/ 4 inches
Chunky weight:15-16 sts/ 4 inches
Aran weight:17-18 sts/ 4 inches
Worsted weight:19-20 sts/ 4 inches
DK weight:21-23 sts/ 4 inches
Sport weight:24-26 sts/ 4 inches
Fingering weight:27-29 sts/ 4 inches
Baby weight:30-32 sts/ 4 inches
Lace weight:33-40 sts/ 4 inches

Please note, terms like “Bulky” and “Chunky” are terms for gauge and do not mean that the yarn is heavy or cumbersome!

Needle size is determined by both YOUR gauge and the type of yarn that you have selected. If you knit or crochet a yarn too tightly, the hand (or feel) will be hard and the garment will be stiff. If you knit or crochet the yarn too loosely, the hand will be too soft and the garment will be limp. As a starting point, the following needles might give you the desired gauge. However, if you produce a tight stitch, you may need to increase the needle size by 1 or 2 sizes and if your work is loose, you may need to reduce the needle size by 1 or 2 sizes.

Polar weight:Knitting needle sizes 15 – 17 or N crochet hook and up
Bulky weight:Knitting needle sizes 10 – 13 or J – M crochet hook
Chunky weight:Knitting needle sizes 9 – 10 or I – J crochet hook
Aran weight:Knitting needle sizes 8 – 9 or H – I crochet hook
Worsted weight:Knitting needle sizes 7 – 8 or G – H crochet hook
Sport weight:Knitting needle sizes 5 – 7 or F – G crochet hook

Again, these are simply suggestions and are intended to point you in the ballpark of what needle size may produce a specific gauge. PLEASE TAKE THE FEW MINUTES TO KNIT OR CROCHET A GAUGE SWATCH. This will help to insure greater success.

Gauge and Converting a Pattern to Match YOUR Gauge

Gauge is one of the simplest things that one can do to help ensure a great garment. It is not time consuming. It enables you to enjoy the new yarn and learn the nuances of the fibers. Especially with novelty yarns, creating a gauge swatch helps you understand the properties of the yarn. It will also help you to decide more accurately about coordinating yarns for ribbing or other trim. Novelty yarns do not always look the same when knit or crocheted and the swatching process will ultimately contribute to a more "professional" look.

Once you gotten this information (and you've written it down in a safe place!), you might want to use the following free tool: The Knitting Companion. (This link will enable you to download The Knitting Companion.)

To quote the developer, "This program converts a knitting pattern stitch gauge (such as you would find in a knitting magazine) to your knitted swatch gauge. After your swatch gauge information is entered; it can calculate the number of stitches and rows you need to knit for a given number of inches. This permits you to take measurements for a garment, do a swatch, and convert the measurements to stitches and rows."

This certainly takes a little time (and I mean just a little time!). It should take you no longer than an hour or so and this is certainly less time than it would take to rip out a garment. It certainly will take less time than the hours of complaining (Am I the only one who does this ?) about the reasons that your project did not fit!

Magic Formula Calculator is a simple program that calculates straight-line increasing and decreasing for knitting projects. The calculations in this program are based on the Diophantine Equation. The term "Magic Formula" was coined by Alles Hutchinson in her book Charting by the Magic Formula. You can download this free program by clicking here.

Substituting Yarn: How Much Yarn Do I Need ?
These simple calculations will assist you.

Step One: Determine the quantitiy of yarn needed to complete the project in the yarn listed in the pattern
     1. Find the number of balls required for each color.
     2. Find the number of yards (or meters) per ball or skein of that yarn.
     3. Multiply the number of yards (or meters) in each ball times the number of balls.

Step Two: Figure out the new quantity
     1. Determine the number of yards (or meters) per ball or skein of your new yarn. The yardage is listed in our product details.
     2. Divide the total yardage required (from Step One) by the yardage of your new yarn.
     3. Be sure to round up to ensure sufficient yarn to complete your project.
