Creating Faux Furs with Yarn - Part 1

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to design knit coats for a furrier in New York City. At that time, it occurred to me that furs are one of the only materials that we use in the fashion industry that evoke such tremendous emotion. While certain groups continue to object to the use of animal fur, it is the one material that is most imitated AND, in its many forms, desired.

This is most clearly demonstrated in the Winter 2003 fashion lines. Whether as coats, vests, scarves or trims, fur and faux fur are vibrantly present. The great news is that we can create similar looks with yarn! I’ve collected some pictures and I’ll provide you with some ideas that may just inspire you to add a faux fur knit (or crochet or woven pieces) to your collection.

While the examples are abundant, I’ve selected several that I believe will translate well into yarn. The first example is DKNY’s fur scarf.

Scarves, in any shape and material, lead the way in the accessory market. And this one presents some great inspiration for fall/winter projects and gifts. Piano, a yarn from Schachenmayr would be a great yarn for this look.

You might also consider using Piano in an adaptation of Carolina Herrera’s fur trimmed vest:

Knit, crochet, weave, or sew a vest using a similar color to the yarn you want to use as the “fur” trim. I’d even go as far as to suggest that you cut the sleeves off of an existing sweater! If you are looking for a trendier look, create your interpretation in a bright color. Our Lane Borgosesia yarn, Swan, would be a great choice for a fur-like yarn in great colors.

Another example of a revisited classic is the “mink vest”. International Concepts® has introduced just such a vest:

To create a similar look, use a yarn such as Piano (I might double the Piano) or Swan and knit a simple vest using a knit 4, purl 2 pattern. Finish it with zipper and you’ve created one of the most popular fashion looks for 2003.

I have even more ideas for you but this column seems to be getting very long. Next month I’ll continue giving you ideas and inspiration for creating faux fur looks. In fact, next month I’ll share a Trendsetter pattern for a wonderful faux fur COAT!

Knit, crochet, or weave like crazy!
